Border Field State Park

Pro-immigration protesters planned a march starting in Border Field State Park in order to highlight the issues and stories faced by the undocumented community there, including concern over “undocumented youth…being used as a tool in Congress to increase enforcement’ (CBS News Channel). This shows a well-founded concern over the political use of fear mongering embodied by the very phrase “anchor babies,” which implies chain migration.The phrase generates an image of something small and seemingly innocuous that brings with it something much larger and heavier–the ship or the family of the baby. This term is potent yet hollow: being the parent of a U.S. citizen is no guarantee of a successful defense in an immigration court, as shown by the high rate of deportation of undocumented immigrants who said they had American-born children (Huffington Post).
