Colombia and Venezuela
Some Venezuelan women journey to Columbia to give birth to their children. As seen in others’ stories, oftentimes Venezuelan women are fleeing disparaging and under-resourced hospitals to gain access to Colombia’s cleaner and healthier hospital system. Again, these women are illustrated in the news and to public policy officials as burdens on Colombia’s public health systems, although it is not illegal for non-Columbian women to give birth in Colombia. There is a common theme in the articles and news that frame women as “burdens” on the public health systems, instead of centering on their reasons for needing to give birth in other countries.
