Dominican Republic and Haiti
In a video about Haitian women crossing the Dominican-Haiti border to give birth at or near the border in DR, Dr. Camila Perozo explains that she treats many pregnant Haitian women who cross the border to receive safer medical services for their birth. The number of Haitian women who die during childbirth is three times the number in the Dominican Republic. Some view these women’s actions as taking advantage of the Dominican public health systems, reflecting a constant rhetoric of exploitation.
In one scene, there is a still photo of what seems to be a newborn baby crying with a crinkled face, wrapped in a blanket on his side. The text across the screen reads “Undocumented Haitians are receiving care at the expense of the Dominican Republic.” One doctor insists that Haitian women’s births and lives are a “load” on the Dominican health system.
