South Africa and Kingdom of eSwatini

This article highlights women from eSwatini (formerly known as Swaziland) who chose to give birth in South Africa. Beginning with the controversy over Democratic Alliance member of Parliament Phumzile van Damme allegedly lying about her South African citizenship, the article focuses on why women from eSwatini and other Sub-saharan African countries give birth in other countries. Some of those motivations include: troubling economies in their home countries, educational benefits, cheaper access to South African universities, access to social grants, belief in economic and social mobility in South Africa, and overall greater access to economic opportunities for their children through Permanent Resident status.
